A song, a journey and some fabric!

To the tune of For He's a Jolly Good Fellow.

I met a girl called Jo
Who told me what she knew
About a fabric gold mine
About a fabric gold mine
About a fabric gooooold miiiiiiiiine
In a place called Oswestry.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo ...

I knew I had to go
A long way off I know
But I knew of a lovely cafe
I knew of a lovely cafe
I knew of a lovely caaaaaaaaaaaaafeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Where I ate and fed the ducks.

Theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen ...

I carried on my way
On such a lovely day
I asked for lots of directions
I asked for lots of directions
I asked for lots of direeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeections
To get me to my shop.

Whispers in awe - Textile Express

I walked into a dream
Bulging at the seams
With every kind of fabric
With every kind of fabric
With every kind of faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabriiiiiiiiiiic
All at a bargain price.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd ...

I went from room to room
The choices made me swoon
With linen, silk and cotton
Corduroy and chambray
Lace and velvet and poooopliiiiiiiiiiin
I had to make a choice.

Soooooooooooooooooooooo ...

I didn't know where to start
So decided to follow my heart
I chose some jazzy cotton
And then some floral poplin
With lots of lovely lineeeeeeeeeeeen
And a couple of trimmimgs too!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooow ...

My purse is nice and light
But what a lovely sight
I'm not sure what to do with it
I'm not sure what to do with it
I'm not sure what to do with iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
Any suggestions please!

And as a final thank you for the tip off

For Jo's a jolly good fellow
For Jo's a jolly good fellow
For Jo's a jolly good fellooooooooooooooow
Pop over and say hello!

Find Jo over here.

(Apologies for the dire use of rhyme)

  3. "It's called Textile Express" said Jo
She told Jane just where to go
    She got in her car
    It wasn't TOO far
And now she can just sew and sew!!

[This rhyming thing really does test me
Can YOU find a rhyme for Oswestry
    My chair's made of wicker
    My husband's a Vicar
And he's down the church, in the vestry!]

That fabric IS great, it is true
My favourite's the print [white and blue]
You could make up a skirt
    Or a very nice shirt
And we'd all say "That's great, look at you!"

  4. Brilliant! And what a lovely shop, and lots of fabulous fabric. I shall look forward to seeing what you make. I'm very much a quilt person, mostly because I can't do the complicated tricksy stuff. But you're a great sewer, no doubt you'll come up with something delightful. CJ xx

    1. I've got lots of lovely images in my head about what I could do but am too much of a lazy trout to actually get started! Now if only I could quilt ;)

  5. Did you compose this while you drove along? I think we can all imagine you singing this ditty in your car, windows down, hair blowing in the wind ... tra la la! Great fabrics!

    1. You know sadly it was going through my head on the way back - and yes the windows were down! Hair blowing in my eyes more like!

  6. You escaped... you got away.... you made it back home!!!
Thank you for a brilliant post. Yes it made me smile (at the dire rhymes, and the looks my family gave me as i tried to sing it) but also because my Mum who is lovely is always looking for a really decent real fabric shop, and now I know where to take her for a day out later this month!

  8. Oooh, I am green with envy!! I want to go tooooo.... Yay for Jo and her aborted teaching trip, I think it was just all part of a grand plan :-)
I need to look up the map and see how long it'd take me to get there - can't really be too far, can it?
Fab little ditty btw, however I shall now retire for the night with it going around and around in my head... (Thanks for that!)

  10. Ah thanks Jane. I told you it was fabulous didn't I? I love the geometric-acid- trip- eye-lashes fabric. Would make a great skirt. Maybe Tilly's new one with buttons down the side or the one from sew me something. If you know the good cafe, we could go there for our next meet up it is just I only knew the shop not anywhere else to make a day of it. Jo x

  12. I'm quite tone deaf so my melody went awry, no matter I loved the end result!

  13. Brilliant, very amusing, my favourite line has to be "my purse is nice and light" but the fabric you bought is right up my street, bright blues and reds. Yes, I like the eye lashes one very much too. It would make a great skirt, just think of the different colour tops you could wear with it. To be honest, I think you have been very modest in your purchases. Enjoy!

  14. How this made me laugh and yes, I did sing along - albeit in my head! I have to congratulate you for being so restrained in your purchases. I think if you made some simple A line skirts they wouldn't take too long and your could just wear different coloured T shirts with them. You could make the main part of the skirt red and have a deep hem of blue at the bottom? Judy.
