Bye bye bunting

Big Sis has finished her first year at Kings. Although we were partly prepared for her to find a job in London over the Summer, part of us also hoped that she might be able to return and fill our home with the usual mess, noise and fun that she brings with her. She has found a flat with some good friends and this weekend returned home to pick up some bits and pieces to make it more homely. We potted on herbs, shopped for pans and bought an old writing table for her room. Her excitement was infectious. She asked if I could make some bunting for their very grand sounding 'roof terrace' so on Friday night we spent a happy couple of hours cutting, stitching and chatting and brought her bunting to life. Yesterday we packed up the car and Mr K drove her back to the Big Smoke. Whilst it was hard seeing her go in September each time she leaves it gets a little harder - a little bit more permanent - and yet so wonderful that she is out there, developing into a brilliant independent young woman.

Bye bye bunting - we'll miss you.

  1. What a great adventure Big Sis is going to have. I really feel for you as she embarks on this though and I am sure she will be in touch each day with stories of what is going on while the bunting flaps in the London air! I'm dreading the day when both of mine fly the nest...don't tell them that though! xx

  2. Oh that pull on the heart strings, I know it so well. Erin's chaos (she is beyond messy) drives me mad when she is at home but oh I miss her so when she has gone. She is back in hall next year so we will have her more next year but who knows after that? But you are right about the joy of seeing your beautiful baby become the adult you hoped for. Lots of love to you x

  3. The bunting is lovely. I am sure you'll miss her but it's a nice opportunity for her. I look forward to doing things like that with my daughter as she gets older; you are a wonderful mom to help her with the bunting.

  4. It's what we all want really, for our children to become independent, happy adults. You must be so proud, I'm sure the bunting will help with many great parties! :) x

  5. How wonderful that she is independent and confident enough to go live in London, but that she still wants and needs your help to make some lovely bunting. As much as you will miss her, it is so lovely that she will have that gorgeous bunting to bring some of your home to her new home! Chrissie x

  6. All credit to you for raising an independent young lady, happy to spread her wings but mindful of the fact that home is where the heart is. And how lovely to help create a memory with bunting too.
    Have a happy week,
    xx

  7. It's such a bug step from being at home and it must be really though after all these years of preparing her for this. Well done mum for succeeding. The bunting is another little part of you she can take with. Xo

  8. Oh my little ones are so small now that this seems far away for me but it will arrive all to quickly ... you have obviously raised a lovely, independent young lady who loves her mum and her home ... Bee xx

  9. Lovely cheery bunting for your daughter to cherish - is that King's College Hospital? I was a sister in the Intensive Care a long time ago and then was on the Transplant co-ordinators based at Dulwich Hospital. I loved my time living in London....feel too tired for that now sadly....
    Best wishes

  10. Letting our children grow up and leave home is one of the hardest things a mum has to do in my opinion. Your post brought it all back to me. *sniff* :o)

  11. Ah, the bunting looks great. How hard it must be to let them go. I have all this to come, but not for a long time...xxx

  13. Such a had thing it must be to let them go, buy that's why we are teaching them all the time so they are safe when they fly the nest. Must have been great making the bunting together.

  15. Ah, what a lovely way to celebrate the Vac, and so good to stand back and watch them mature . What an adventure Big Sis is having hope she enjoys every minute before it is time to strike out in the Big World!

  16. Oh! Our babies grow up too quickly, don't they? My oldest is only 8 yet I can already tell that 10 years from now I am not going to handle him leaving the nest very well at all. Luckily he says he is going to live down the street from me FOREVER! I'd like to believe that, but know I really shouldn't....

  17. How nice that you and your daughter made this bunting together :) A nice reminder for her of the time spent at home. I know what you mean that each time they leave seems a little more permanent, but to send them off full of confidence is a very satisfactory feeling. Wendy

  20. I feel the same every time my daughter visits and then goes back home to London. She moved about 6 years ago and adores the city but I still feel sad when she leaves. On a happy note I am going to visit her next week. Love your bunting so your sister will have a little bit of you with her xxx

  21. Your bunting is lovely. I like your pinking shears approach, less hemming. My kids are small so I can't really offer any pearls of wisdom but I remember how much I loved to come home throughout uni, and afterwards too. Where she grew up will still be your daughter's home for a few years yet. x
